My today FOSDEM experience

img_0343.jpg

I have been to FOSDEM today. This was a terrific moment. I first attend FOSDEM in February 2006. See the photo upwards. We were three on the booth. Today, I don’t even attend the booth to welcome people as it is very very crowded by Fedora Ambassadors. This is so great to see so many Fedora people at the same time. About my personal experience, FOSDEM is no conference day. 99% of them are much too difficult for me to understand as I am no developer at all. However, this is a great place to be to meet people and talk about how things are going inside the French Community.

So nearly as soon as I arrived, I met Frédéric Hornain, my first Belgium buddy I set up a booth with back in February 2006. Every year, I have a little chat with him. Today, I explained how my feelings were mixed inside the Fedora Project as a contributor. Actually, I feel sometimes tired about explaining the same things to people about Fedora again. I’m looking for another way to contribute inside the Project and certainly a place where I could avoid the very user base of the Project. Deeper inside translation and maybe inside some learning Project that I talk about later in this blog post.

Once I could reach the Fedora booth (wow, FOSDEM is even more crowded this year than it was last year!!) I met Dimitri Glezos and exchanged about our lives, about how good the Indifex company is. We were joined by Max Spevack and Jared Smith, who I first met today. It was a delight to see all of you at the same time. Jared, you’re right. We have to meet people to achieve a full circle of right communication. We decided to run a meeting with Pierre-Yves Chibon, vice-president of the French Fedora NPO and looked for Nicolas Chauvet to join us.

We discuss about the future of the French NPO. I’m glad to say that we are doing everything we can to be really back in business. The last two years were a bit confusing and slow pace unfortunately. I refuse to bear this again for the two upcoming years. Communication, again, is the key. Meeting Max and Jared was so good, that we dealt with all our topics in 40 minutes no more. At the end of the discussion, we talk about having Moodle inside the Fedora Project Moodle with Max and Jared and we were so excited about all this! I really want to help doing the right thing on this project. I just can’t wait for it.

We then decided it was time for lunch. We went to eat a very nice couscous in Brussels with some ambassadors, of whom two Tunisian ambassadors. I was very happy to meet them again and see they are safe after what they endured in their country few weeks ago. Guys, you really rock!!! I had a talk with Gerold Kassube which helped me understand the death of the Fedora EMEA e.V. NPO. Too bad it ended like this. During the meal, I listened to some very interesting conversation about “what does being an ambassador mean?”. Very hard question to answer, even 5 or 6 years after the creation of the first ambassador group by Alex Maier.

When we came back to the booth we tried to settle a money problem with the last CD order of the Tunisian guys. This is going to be solved very soon thanks to the good will of everybody and the French NPO. Glad it exists. Then I met up my former colleagues from Mageia, bought them a t-shirt and discussed how they are doing. I’m really looking forward testing the first ISO of this new distribution.

Finally, I had some quick talks again with Dimitris about how Transifex.net could save the Fedora Translation Project and how far we can delegate translation management in the hand of the community. These are really great stuff I’m looking forward to playing with. Just before I left, I met Pablo Martin-Gomez and we discussed about translation and again how Transifex.net seems to be the last valuable option we have to enjoy a workable translation environment that would not afraid people anymore.

I can’t wait for all these projects to get realised. I can’t wait for next year FOSDEM, to look back on what we have achieved in that friendship altogether. Thank you to all of you guys, you rock, see you next year!!

FOSDEM Day #2

I had one of the best night I ever had in any hotel on the world. Incredible! Breakfast was also very good, I really don’t have any regret about the hotel, except the wifi connection. Even if it is annoying, I can live without it 2 days.

Day #2 was very busy as well. First, we had talks with Max and Yaakov. These were very productive and we were able to give the roadmap of Fedora-fr like we were never able before and how we could handle our wiki and the Fedora Project wiki in a smarter manner. Human resources remains the problems we are all facing. We all have big dreams and very limited resources to achieve them. We may look into means to motivate people to get involve, there are few things we would like to try. We then attend two conferences in the theatre, like ext4 for example, and I feel very enthusiast to install Fedora 11 alpha as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, we talked very quickly with Luca Fappiano and it seems Fedora Italian guys may need some advices for their community. We stay available for anything that is able to help anybody, so don’t hesitate to contact us directly and have a good talk about what you want.

Finally, I shook everybody’s hands and finished talking into the train station with Armel and Xavier. I really love when someone had always something to share

I was very happy to attend this year FOSDEM. I’m really looking forward next year FOSDEM, because it means we will have lots more to talk about what has been achieved everywhere around the world.

FOSDEM Day #1

FOSDEM is always great! But it is not the same great as I used to practice it. Four or fives years ago, I came to FOSDEM to meet people to know what they had to show and what they were promoting.

Today, I come to FOSDEM because it is the central European point where you can meet everybody important in every community.

This first day was busier than I planned. I stood in the Fedora presentation room and attended the RPM package conference. This was quite difficult to follow, as the heat of the room made me feel sleepy. However, it relieved me a lot because I find packaging more doable that I thought it was.

I then attended the openSUSE conference then in the big and impressive theatre. It is really fun and curious how the Fedora Project organization is seen as a model for others important communities. I could not attend all the conference because mine was just starting.

I was doing a Fedora-fr conference, to let people know what is our next big challenges. This conference was great! Armel and Pierre-Yves were there to respond and explain many things as well. In fact, we were three doing it and really working as a team. Fedora-fr big challenge will mainly be not to stay working inside France and for France, but to try and find ways to help other French communities. We also have big plans for France community, stay tune, you’ll hear about them soon I hope.

Chistrophe Sautier was attending the Fedora-fr conference, and this was really really cool from him. But maybe you don’t know Christophe. He is the ubuntu-fr NPO president. Doesn’t it rock? We had a great talk with him and Armel about all the problems we are facing in France and it happens we are having the same (about creating CD for example). We are going to try and work in a more efficient manner with him and to contact as well other communities and enterprises. There are lots of things we would be able to achieve all together.

Finally, we went back to the hotel and had a quick an Italian restaurant and fell asleep.

Meeting minute from Paris

10:40. I am in the train. Not in any train, the one that takes me away from Paris. See you soon Paris, you again made me spend a moment with the Fedora community. THE Fedora | Paris user group, who knows the lower recesses of the capital, who knows how to organize meetings and festive winy meals and to meet and forge the bonds of community. So just to thank you that you struggle as much for the community, to do what it is today, active, involved, rigorous, but also cheerful, smiling and motivated to move forward in the best atmosphere that is .
I left Paris and, alone on my seat toward Saint-Quentin, I have a toe in the heart. I wished it continued, that we meet again to work and organize the future, that we spend good nights like last night.

Flashback.

12:50. I'm walking on the Parisian pavement toward the meeting room reserved for the occasion. Not any occasion, but an opportunity that does not happen often, too often, a chance that we will not forget anytime soon: an American in Paris, no one can forget that! So let's go to the meeting room, but before I must join Pierre-Yves and Armel, who are already with Max. I was asked to bring dessert for their meals, it is with pleasure that I do it. A apricots tart and a coffee later, Guillaume joined us and we walked to the meeting room, two steps from here. The other participants join us, we will be able to work under the flash of Xavier, said the paparazzi. Once we have his photos available, you will see that he captured the most unforgettable moments of this event.

14.15. The meeting begins with an overview of what the francophone community has been able to achieve until now. The figures follow, comments, encouragements and congratulations as well. Fedora in Francophonie today is a thirty ambassadors gathered around a community portal and a non profit association to lead and organize the events of ambassadors. How to share the fruits of the Francophone community with the world community? How to help users of Fedora in the world to improve their knowledge of the system? That was the first big question, which we already had a reply for: translate the documentation of Fedora-fr. The French translators will not do it, the task is too great and we are too small. Google Translate will do it, then, the volunteers would continue the work within the Documentation Project.

It has also been talk of improving relations with Red Hat. Not that they are bad, but rather inexistant for the moment, in no way official. And yet we work together ... on the same projects and we aspire to the same objectives through the Fedora Project: the rapid and sustained development of free software. What Red Hat could bring us? Red Hat could for example provide us with a lot of elements advertising on Fedora. They could provide us with LiveCDs directly, posters, printing of stickers, we help ensure an effective presence at booths where we are together.

Regarding infrastructure made available by Project, opinions differ on the need to create and deliver images. Iso already in the language of the person who downloads it. Yet it is still easier to convince someone to install Fedora when he realizes that the software has been responsive to the individual and not vice versa. The user should not have to choose the language, the software must be available for the masses in their own languages. Since Fedora-fr provides French Fedora ISOs, we can announce it has been downloaded is more than 1000 times. For only Fedora 8 and 9, the figure stands at 760. Not that much? No, it's a beautiful figure, because it is achieved by a single system of downloading, Bittorrent, and we do not particularly help user to install and configure Bittorrent. The figure could be more important, with other means of downloading. The Fedora Project can remain close to its users by opening the doors of the hosting isos located within it.

Also in regard to infrastructure, Africa has no mirror server for Fedora. This is really a pity. But men are there and contacts have started with the Tunisian community to establish the first server Fedora in Africa. The Project can help build the infrastructure.

It was also the question of working more closely with the European Association of Fedora. There are opportunities not dissociate certain skills and pooling our knowledge. It must work, we have to be together to ensure that each of ambassadors has at its disposal all necessary resources to carry out its objectives. I am motivated to make that happen, I am eager to share my knowledge of Fedora-fr and the experience gained since. We'll get there.

We were also able to address the inherent question of the budget made available by the Fedora Project. The Max Draft Q3 is really very good. New elements have seemed important to fund during the meeting, I liked to do so perhaps earlier. Fortunately, the period is there to read it and have it improved a bit:)

Likewise, future events were discussed briefly. What can be done to Solution Linux, which promises to be huge? When do we invite foreign ambassadors to participate in local events? Without forgetting Parinux, who joined us. It is a very good thing Emmanuel was able to be with us. They see how we operate, he can now understand us better for our different needs. We'll have to discuss about the way to thank you either, we won't forget what you've done for us so far.

18.00. The meeting ends. We decide to go in a bar near the restaurant planned for the evening. Prime debriefing. How to put in place the next events? Pierre-Yves will be charged for determining the details. Thanks to this "details man" from the shadows to take over with as much fervor the careful organization of each element in Fedora-fr. I promise you that you have results soon at your disposal :) A beer further, we go in the restaurant "The wine that dances", few steps back in the street. I'm looking forward Max' reaction to the dishes at our disposal. And by the way, they were excellent. The concept is very simple: bread, wine, and what to put on one's bread. Prime shelf ... cheese, which was eating soooo quiclky. We had "brie", "bleu d'Auvergne", "Cantal" and "goat cheese". Mmh France, mmmh Paris:) The second shelf has been as successful: charcuterie (smoked ham, saucisson sec, the andouillette). Very well, indeed, it is quite my habit whent being back from my job to take a piece of bread with a slice of saucisson. I felt as if I were at home. The third shelf, fish, was less convincing. I began not to be very hungry. The last one, however was much more refreshing, with vegetables and cold olive oil ratatouille. Similarly, opening a ratatouille box and eat directly from it is part of my favorites weakness.

23:30. Wine and a piece of chocolate cake later, we returned to our homes for a well deserved rest. We walked a bit more so as Max does not leave Paris without having had a tiny glimpse of what extraordinary places the city can offer in terms of culture and tourism. Notre Dame has made his job and has imposed its presence in the eyes of our guest. Final and quiet discussions in the subway and on the way home. A good shower later, I was in an extra bed rocked by Guillame grumbly belly and his "Damn! No more mussels and chipsat will!". The loo will probably remember him for a long time.

8:45. "Tell me Thomas that someone is calling you and that it is not the sound of your alarm clock." Unfortunately it was. I slept very well. Sephi thank you for the invitation, the shower and the bed. I still had time to retrieve my mail and can install notification-daemon-engine-nodoka, strangely absent from my machine and set it up correctly.

9.30. Departure in direction of the Gare du Nord. I am on time, I am happy. I was able to move quickly to the Quick Restaurant in front of the train station to look for what to fill my stomach: strawberry milkshake and muffin.

The loop is completed. Thank you all again and again.

Petit rapport d'activité de réunion parisienne

P'us jamais les moules frites à volonté ! ». Jacob s'en souviendra longtemps vraisemblablement.
